Kelowna Botox - Just the Facts

What is  Botox®?

Botox® is a purified natural protein used to relax the muscles that cause facial wrinkles for a smooth and rejuvenated appearance.

How does it work?

Botox® works by temporarily interfering with the release of acetylcholine, the "messenger molecule" that signals a muscle to contract and move.  With the transmission blocked, the muscle relaxes providing relief to overactive muscles.

How long does it last?

While many factors contribute to the duration of the effect, you can generally expect the effect to last anywhere from 2 to 6 months.  Some of the factors that tend to influence the duration of the
Botox® effect are age, injection location and your body's metabolism.

Is Botox a poison?  Is it safe?

Botox® has been used safely and effectively for over 20 years to treat the visual signs of aging by reducing or eliminating both static and dynamic wrinkles.  What's interesting is that the first uses for Botox® were not for facial aesthetics.  The medicine was first used to treat medical conditions such as Strabismus (crossed eyes), Blepharospasm (eye twitching), Cervical Dystonia (neck spasms) as well as foot deformities in children with Cerebral Palsy.

Botox® is a medicine.  When used in the hands of a well trained and experienced clinician, the side effects are considered to be rare.  As with any medication, side effects do exist and vary according to injection site, dose, frequency of injections and the knowledge and training of your  Botox® provider.  Most side effects such as pain, tenderness or bruising at the site of injection are temporary.

General Procedure

The entire procedure often takes less than 15 minutes.  Typically, a small amount of the medicine is injected into the desired muscle group using a tiny needle, similar to needles used by diabetic patients to inject Insulin.  The injection is often painless, and often equated to the sensation of a small bug bite like that of a mosquito. Our clients generally return to their normal activities immediately following treatment, however we do recommend a few simple post-procedure guidelines to maximize the effect of your treatment.   Physical exertion, massaging the treated areas or laying down flat are all activities not recommended immediately following the procedure.

Common areas for Botox® injections include horizontal forehead furrows or vertical "frown-lines" between the eyebrows and "crow's feet" around the eyes.  A mini "brow-lift" can also be acheived, as well as a variety of other interesting and exciting therapies to enhance your appearance.
